One day a father took his rich family and his son on a trip to the country with the firm purpose of showing him how poor people can be. They spent a day and a night on the farm of a very poor family. When they got back from their trip the father asked his son, "How was the trip?"

"Very good, Dad!"

" Did you see how poor people can be?" the father asked.

"Yeah!"

"And what did you learn?"

The son answered, " I saw that we have a dog at home, and they have four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of the garden, they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lamps in the garden, they have the stars. our patio reaches to the front yard, they have a whole horizon."

When the little boy was finished, his father was speechless.

His son added, "Thanks, Dad, for showing me how poor we are!"

James 1:13-16

¹³ And remember, when you are being tempted, do not say, “God is tempting me.” God is never tempted to do wrong,^{a]" style="font-size: 0.75em; line-height: 0.5em; ">[a]} and he never tempts anyone else. ¹⁴ Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away. ¹⁵ These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death.¹⁶ So don’t be misled, my dear brothers and sisters.

Many years ago I was watching TV and came across a movie that had the feel of Dead Poet's Society. It featured older teens in separate boys' and girls' upscale prep schools. Since the movie was on a family channel and appeared to be about teen decision-making in sexual behavior, I stuck wit it-until its message became clear.

The plot of the movie was that peer pressure was pushing two virgin couples to yield to their sexual desires. And the "profound" message was that when you can't resist the lure of sex, be sure to use a condom. The " responsible" couple carefully planned their encounter- and required deceiving both sets of parents and their prep school deans. The "irresponsible" couple ended up having to make a decision about abortion.

The "responsible" young man sat down on the bed, took a condom out of his pocket, and reached to place it on the nightstand. But the nightstand already had something on it: a Gideon Bible. The movie director made sure the next movement was calculated. The boy stared at the Bible for a moment, then quickly shoved it into the drawer.

I've never seen a more poignantly illustrated, determined path toward sinful behavior. Even those who don't agree to biblical moral standards appear to have within them the understanding that the Bible is right: Sex outside the bonds of marriage is wrong. The determination to indulge in sexual sin is ultimately as calculated as the determination to remain sexually pure.

2 Kings 4 Elisha Helps a Poor Widow

¹ One day the widow of a member of the group of prophets came to Elisha and cried out, “My husband who served you is dead, and you know how he feared the Lord. But now a creditor has come, threatening to take my two sons as slaves.”² “What can I do to help you?” Elisha asked. “Tell me, what do you have in the house?” “Nothing at all, except a flask of olive oil,” she replied.³ And Elisha said, “Borrow as many empty jars as you can from your friends and neighbors. ⁴ Then go into your house with your sons and shut the door behind you. Pour olive oil from your flask into the jars, setting each one aside when it is filled.”⁵ So she did as she was told. Her sons kept bringing jars to her, and she filled one after another. ⁶ Soon every container was full to the brim! “Bring me another jar,” she said to one of her sons. “There aren’t any more!” he told her. And then the olive oil stopped flowing.⁷ When she told the man of God what had happened, he said to her, “Now sell the olive oil and pay your debts, and you and your sons can live on what is left over.”

Gary felt guilty, and he didn't know why. Wasn't he doing everything a Christian ought to be doing? After all, he had chosen Christian college and dedicated his life to serving God! Yet a nebulous cloud of guilt fogged Gary's life. He dreaded chapel because of it's testimony time, when students praised God for His goodness in their lives.

Week after week, someone would get up and glowingly report "how the Lord has provided." How Gary hated those words! One student would tell of an anonymous money order that arrived in time of mid-semester tuition. Another received a surprise scholarship.

Gary didn't audibly pray the words, but he thought, Lord I'm serving You. I'm studying hard. I pray and read Your word. My tuition's due too, Lord. How come I don't get free money?

In 2 Kings 4, a widow was in desperate straits (v.1). Her God-fearing husband had died, leaving her face a mean-spirited creditor who was about to take her two sons as slaves.

God's prophet Elisha chose to take an inventory of her resources-a single jar of oil! Then he instructed her to borrow empty jars from her neighbors. Through God's miraculous provision, that oil, coupled with the woman's diligent obedience, turned into a financial windfall (vv.3-7)

It didn't happen instantly for Gary either, but God answered his prayers. Gary could work. He had his health and a decent job. His car, though not impressive, was reliable. he graduated debt-free and now serves God as a pastor.

Do you feel that all the "miracles" are going to others? Praise God for the provisions He makes for you each day.

* Reflect on how God has provided for your needs in the past. Praise Him for the way he has blessed and cared for you!!

James 1:2-8

" ² Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. ³ For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. ⁴ So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.

⁵ If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. ⁶ But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. ⁷Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. ⁸ Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do.

In the first half of the 20th century, racial segregation laws were enforced in the United States. Even jazz great Duke Ellington was prevented from staying in the guest rooms of hotels where he and his band performed. When asked how this discrimination made him feel, Ellington replied, " I tool the energy it takes to pout and rote some blues." He allowed an ugly ,race-based situation to build up his character.

Isn't that what James was after in the opening chapter of the book that bears his name? He reminded his readers that trials are inevitable (v.2). He wanted us to fully grasp the idea that they can be used to help us grow and develop spiritually (v.3). James wanted his audience to read his letter and walk away with the understanding that trials can build character and faith in the believer, and it requires three things:

• Trials can build character if we respond to them appropriately. Our response should be one of joy (James 2:2). James was telling was not telling us to be happy about the pain experienced, but to find joy in a relationship with Jesus and the fact that we have been counted worthy to suffer for Him ( Philippians 1: 29)
• Trials can build character if we accurately understand the reason for our trials. the purpose of trials is to produce patience and allow patience to help us develop into more mature Christians (James 1: 3-4).
• Trials can build character if we rely on God absolutely. We should ask God for wisdom and answers as we go through various trials (v.5).

God is still looking for people who will not pout about their trials, but who will allow Him to use their them to make beautiful music for the world. " When your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow" (1:3)
